Research Wizard

A powerful custom equity screening program, ideal for identifying new buying opportunities.

Research Wizard Screen Shots

The Research WizardTM is a powerful custom equity screening program, ideal for identifying new buying opportunities, monitoring your portfolio and backtesting for performance.

The Research Wizard 4.0 combines the best of two worlds: the software that still resides on your computer and current and historical data accessed via Zacks data servers.

As an additional bonus, you are also given an option to work with our current market database in the off-line mode if you choose so.

The Research Wizard 4.0 package also includes Intraday price and volume data and Intraday EPS Surprises.

The Research Wizard is also an automation tool. This automation ability (called scripting) is a time-saver that allows you to combine repetitive tasks into one process, similar to macros in the spreadsheet and word processing programs. Once you have defined your script, with one click you can then run a series of screens and reports, an then print or export the results.

The Research WizardTM may be used to:

  • Perform interactive screening to explore market distributions and find companies for investment consideration.
  • Run predefined screens to generate and update the list of possible new companies of interest.
  • Examine the fundamental characteristics of current holdings or search for potential valuable additions to your portfolio.
  • Access preconfigured multi-company reports, as well as reports you may create or modify independently.
  • Perform user-defined calculations and screen and report on resulting values.
  • Access preconfigured reports that alert you to the price-driven events affecting stocks in your portfolio (i.e. changes in brokerage analyst EPS estimates, changes in brokerage firm recommendations, and EPS surprises).
  • View your screen's performance relative to a benchmark over time.

    The Research Wizards' components include:

  • Customized Screening and Portfolio Management - search for new investments meeting your criteria; build custom reports based on your screening results; export reports to Excel and/or text files.
  • EZ Screen - The EZ Screen allows you to screen and generate reports using thirteen pre-designated items based on six pre-determined criteria. This gives you a simplified point-and-click screening/reporting access to the Zacks database. - a quick way to select companies using 13-pre-selected screening criteria.
  • Alerts - preformatted reports monitoring price-impacting events in your portfolio: daily alerts to EPS surprises, estimate revisions, changes in broker recommendations and price changes.
  • Zacks Company SnapshotTM - A single company report featuring company description, actual and estimated EPS, company vs. industry ratings, fundamental data, broker recommendations and price charts.
  • Internet-Based Reports - Research Wizard provides access to several preformatted single company reports that include:
    • Fundamental Reports (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow tables)
    • Return on Equity Reports
    • Risk Rating/Bankruptcy Reports
    • Ratio and Turnover Rates
    • Business Descriptions Reports
    • Management's Discussion and Analysis Reports
    • Full Company Report
    • Zacks Company Report
    • Analyst Recommendations Report
    • Insider Trading Report
  • Zacks Rank

The Zacks Rank is based upon a proprietary stock selection model developed by Zacks Investment Research in 1980. The ranking predicts which stocks will outperform or underperform the market averages during the next three months. The 1 to 5 ranking (1=Best Expected Performance) is updated weekly, and is derived entirely from a multi-factor model which analyzes the momentum of analysts' earnings estimate revisions.

Zacks Rank #1 stocks have outperformed the S & P 500 in every year since 1980, with the exception of 1984 and 1998. Between 1980 and 1998, the Zacks Ranked #1 stocks provided an average annual return of 35.1% vs. only 17.4% for the S&P 500.

  • Backtesting

With the Research Wizard you can produce reports showing the performance of your screens. The Backtest option in the Research Wizard enables you to select a saved screen definition and to test it historically. The backtest report also allows you to view the screen performance relative to a benchmark over time.

    Current Data

Current Market Data database has a universe of over 6,500 active companies and includes company description, size and share volume information, price and price changes, analyst recommendations and recommendation changes, annual and quarterly consensus estimate data, expected report dates, growth rates, actual EPS, valuation and financial ratios, and Income/Balance Sheet items.

Zacks EPS estimates and actuals have been and continue to be maintained in conformance with a proprietary definition of operating earnings per share before extraordinary and non-recurring items. Comparison between Zacks estimates and Zacks actuals is a comparison between definitionally-comparable numbers.

    Historical Data

With the inception of Zacks Investment Research in 1978, Zacks history databases were born. All data is collected and maintained directly by us. Providing timely current equity investment information to investors is an ongoing process. Zacks' databases incorporate critical fundamental data including earnings estimates, stock recommendations, and earnings surprises. New increments of Zacks history are added each day, as we collect, monitor and maintain the North American equity research data.

Designed and used by Zacks' own quantitative analysts, Zacks history databases have several characteristics which may make it better suited for use in applications or situations where consistency of definition and preciseness of dating are relevant considerations.
